Its cool gulf breezes lured him from a life of danger. Its dark undercurrents threatened to destroy him.

After ten years of living life on the edge, it was hard for Doc Ford to get that addiction to danger out of his system. But spending each day watching the sun melt into Dinkins Bay and the moon rise over the mangrove trees, cooking dinner for his beautiful neighbor, and dispensing advice to the locals over a cold beer lulled him into letting his guard down.

Then Rafe Hollins appeared.

How could he refuse his old friend's request-even if it would put him back on the firing line? Even if it would change forever the life he'd built here on Sanibel Island?

LOOKING FOR MARION FORD?

Reviewed by James L. Woolridge, 2009-11-29

Are you looking at SANIBEL FLATS becuase you missed it in 1990? So did I but I am so glad I found it and I am sure you will be too. Rany Wayne White's hero, Marion "Doc" Ford, a marine biologist with secret past of espionage, is a great hero. He and his friends at Dinkins Bay on Florida's West Coast are interesting and engaging.
I hope you are starting the series here, with the first one, the best way to go. Come on,go with Doc to South America to rescue a friend's child.
Only 15 more books after that and by the time you finish those, others will be out. I hope!
Many reasons to try this book:
You like mysteries. SANIBEL FLATS is honored as one of the "Hundred Favorite Mysteries of the 20th Century." And White won the JOHN D. MACDONALD AWARD FOR LITERARY EXCELLENCE.
You like Carl Hiaasen, John D. MacDonald, James Hall.
You have environmental concerns and Doc lets you know his.
You like books with great, rich characters. Wait till you meet Tomlison and the others around Dinkins Bay or down the road a book or two, Uncle Tucker Gatrell.
You like Florida stories.
You like books about the sea and Florida waters.
You just like a good read, a fun read.
Enough, enough already. I like the Doc Ford books. Try it and you will too.

GREAT!

I choose this book because I like Sanibel Island, but I wasn't expecting much from the book. To my surprise and delight I loved it! I am already reading book #2, which I also love with #3 waiting on my desk to read next and #4 & 5 are in the Amazon cart ready for my next order! I just wish Mr White could write them as fast as I read them.

Sanibel Flats

Randy Wayne White is a wonderful story teller. I was introduced to his books less than thiry days ago, and this is my forth one. I'm not an avid reader, but the stories are so very interesting.
A key - the books should be read in the order they have been written. Otherwise, you may mess up the story line or give you clues as to what may happen.

Great reading!

Read them in order is my suggestion. It does make a difference! You will enjoy Doc Ford and his buddies! I have read them all and am waiting for the next one. In the meantime I have read John D. MacDonald's first 9 Travis McGee series.

Good adventure, but predictable and even a bit slow

Reviewed by Danton McDiffett, 2009-08-16

Sanibel Flats takes quite a while to get moving, but when it does, mainly through Doc Ford and Tomlinson's adventures in Masagua, a fictional Central American country, it's a lot of fun to read.
I suppose if an author's introducing characters around whom he hopes to build several novels, then some lengthy exposition is necessary in the first of those novels. But Doc Ford's philandering gets old quickly, and I'm no moralist preacher! But sleeping with one woman he's just met only hours after doing the same with a woman he's led to think he cares about is just more than I need. Let Doc and Tomlinson get on with the rescue of Jake Hollins and I'm right there with them, though.
